GCSE Geography Field Trip

Year 10 Geography pupils continued to complete their controlled assessment during a survey based activity on Thursday 9th June 2016.

The purpose of the visit was to further investigate the topic of study: The Challenge of Weather and Climate-Investigating Local Responses to Global Climate Change. Pupils interacted with members of the general public in order to gain an understanding of Newham’s responses to climate change.

Pupils visited four locations throughout the day to help them to record their results via four methods of data collection. The locations included: Forest Gate TFL Rail Station, Romford Road, Green Street, Upton Park Tube Station.

Method 1: Surveys

The questionnaire surveys were created by pupils in order to test their hypothesis. Each person in the group surveyed 10 people over the course of the day.

Method 2: Transport Use Survey

The transport use survey was used to record the transport methods that the general public use in the local area.

Method 3: Carrier Bag Recycling Survey

Pupils had permission to go into supermarkets to record the amount of people who recycle carrier bags and the amount of people who purchase carrier bags.

Method 4: Bin Use Survey

Pupils estimated the percentage of rubbish that is recyclable in each bin.

The field trip  proved to be a fantastic experience for pupils and provided them with skills that would essentially allow them to collect data using appropriate techniques, in a safe manner. Pupils gained experience in teamwork, analysis, coordination, decision making and confidence building.

Pupils impressed staff and members of the public with their fantastic behaviour and proved to be a real credit to the school.
